Doug Hammer, PGA
Director of Instruction
Doug Hammer is a PGA professional and has experience with golfers of all levels from all over the world. His client list consists of beginners to top ranked amateurs and professional players. His philosophy is simple—there is no perfect swing for everyone. Doug is a student of the game and studies every technique to be able to help every golfer, no matter what they may be working on or learning. In addition to helping grow the game of golf through coaching, Doug was one of the first Callaway Certified Master Fitters in the United States and conducts custom clubfittings in the Callaway Performance Center at Troon North. It is important to have equipment that fits your game—if you are playing equipment that is not correct for you, you may be able to improve your scores by improving the clubs you play.
Doug Hammer is a Class A member of the Southwest Section of the PGA of America and is the 2019 Southwest PGA Youth Player Development Award winner. Since 1999, Doug has worked for Troon Golf in various capacities and has been a PGA member since 2001. Originally from a small community in southeast Iowa, Doug came to Arizona in 1997 to enter the golf business. Doug began with Troon Golf at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa as an assistant golf professional and began teaching as much as possible. In 2001, he became the head golf professional at The Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA and in 2002, the Director of Instruction at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena, IL where Doug began working with Troon Golf Director of Education and Top 100 teacher, Tim Mahoney. Doug spent four years as the Director of Instruction at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ, prior to coming to Troon North in December of 2007. He also has international experience working as Director of Instruction for the David Duval Golf Academy in Miyazaki, Japan, and the Banyan Tree Club and Spa in Seoul, South Korea.
Doug is a regular contributor to Golf Tips Magazine and is recognized as one of their Top 30 instructors. Doug is also a 7-time GRAA Top 50 Growth of the Game award winner, the 2019 Southwest PGA Youth Player Development Award winner, and has been nominated for Southwest Section Teacher of the Year each of the past 3 years.

Ryan Mahoney, PGA
Ryan is a Class A PGA Professional and has worked at Troon North Golf Club for the past thirteen years. During his tenure he has had the opportunity to teach alongside such renowned instructors as Tim Mahoney, Steve Dahlby, and Doug Hammer. While at Troon North, Ryan has provided instruction to thousands of guests from all around the world and has also taught hundreds of clinics to various golfers of all abilities.
Ryan is also in charge of the Troon North Junior Academy which, consists of our junior clinics, summer and winter camps, Elite-Masters year long program, Ping Junior Interclub team and PGA Junior League. Under Ryan’s guidance, our Troon North Junior Academy has become one of Arizona’s premiere junior programs for kids of all abilities to learn, develop, and grow their passion for the game of golf. Ryan has been recognized as one of US Kids Golf Top 50 Coaches, Honorable Mention over the past five consecutive years.
Ryan also oversees our player development programs designed for women golfers of all skill levels. This includes our popular “Mulligans and Martinis” clinic as well as clinics during the weekend and playing clinics, offered Friday afternoons.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Ryan presides as the one of the Callaway Fitting Specialist in the Callaway Performance Center. The CPC, as it is more commonly known, allows guest to be fit utilizing the same cutting edge fitting equipment, which is used on many of today’s stars on the PGA, LPGA, and European Tours. Ryan’s philosophy is simple and easy to comprehend, he does not teach one method but emphasizes on creating a swing that will provide consistency. Ryan feels that focusing on preparation, progressive learning and having fun, is the key to being successful at golf. Ryan was first introduced to the game when he was a young kid growing up on Bainbridge Island, WA. His eventual passion for golf earned him a scholarship to play for Eckerd College, located in St. Petersburg, FL. Ryan would go on to earn his Bachelor Degrees in both Business Management and Finance.

Tim Mahoney, PGA
Director of Education, Troon
Tim Mahoney is currently director of education for Troon Golf, the premier golf property management and consulting firm in the golf industry. He is responsible for all golf instruction programs and instruction staff at select managed/owned properties since 1995. Tim is the creator of the Troon Golf Academy, Troon Golf Institute, Mahoney Golf Academy and the David Duval Golf Academy.
When not training other teachers, he teaches all levels of golfer from his home bases at Westin Kierland Golf Club and Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. During the summer months he teaches at The Club at Cordillera, Vail, Colorado
His commitment to the game is evident in his involvement in so many areas, including lecturing at teaching seminars, consulting in the development of computer software for golf swing analysis, development of learning centers and practice facilities and, most of all, the hours spent on the lesson tee with amateurs and professional players alike.
Tim is one of most highly decorated teachers in America. He is listed among America's Top 50 Greatest Teachers as ranked by Golf Digest, and has been among the "Top 100 Teachers" in America as ranked by Golf Magazine for more than a decade. He is featured in the Golf Digest video "15 Shots to Save Your Golf Game" and GOLF Magazine's Top 100 Teachers, The More Series DVDs as well as Neat Video's computer software program: "Tim Mahoney's Short Game Secrets." He also appears regularly on The Golf Channel's "Golf Academy Live," on various Southwest regional golf shows and has been a featured instructor on ESPN.
Tim has instructed members of all four major American tours. His students have included Billy Mayfair and David Duval. For many years, Tim taught for the Golf Digest Golf Schools for more than 20 years (1981-2002) conducting more than 3,500 events worldwide. He was also a member of the Golf Digest Pro Panel contributing more than 40 instruction articles to the magazine including three cover stories.
Tim has a degree in marketing from West Texas State University, where he was a member of the Missouri Valley All-Conference Golf Team in 1984. He currently lives in Scottsdale with his wife Karen, daughters Megan and Michelle.

Corporate and group golf instruction programs are the perfect way to make you business meetings more successful, productive, and memorable. Or if you are traveling with your group for pleasure, what better way to show your group a great time than treating them to some entertaining and educational golf instruction. This program is designed to add a personal touch to your golf outing. Our Professionals will video the swing of each golfer in your outing. All participants will receive an email of their swings with a professional analysis. Email can be personalized with your company logo, name, and date of your golf outing.
On-Course Instruction (8 person minimum) | $199.00 pp
This program is designed to create enjoyment among your group on the golf course. Our professional staff will join your group on the course to provide instruction, course management, and fun! Typically one professional can cover 2 to 4 groups, playing intervals of the course with each group.
One-hour Clinic (8 to 100 people)
Usually a single topic clinic covering full swing or short game.

Two-hour Clinic (8 to 100 people)
Usually a multiple topic clinic covering full swing and chipping or putting.

2020 Junior Academy
Our mission at the Troon North Junior Golf Academy is to provide a high level of instruction to our young golfers, establishing an environment that refines important golf skills, and fun instructional programs, our students will learn the basics of the game and will be given a solid foundation to enjoy a lifetime of golf.
Cadet Program:
During Level 1 Cadet Program our goal is to create a fun environment where new, young golfers can learn some of tjhe basics of golf while playing enjoyable and exciting games that test their overall golf skills. Curriculum also covers traditional rules and etiquette, while utilizing our unique methods so that each young golfer will learn the game at their own pace.
- When: Every Sunday (12:00PM to 1:00PM)
- Cost: $35 Per Junior
Cadet-Master's Program:
The Cadet-Master's program is designed specifically for more experienced junior golfers who are ready to be playing on the course and possibly looking forward to competing in competive golf tournaments. Curriculum will focus on developing specific golf skills, such as distance control, power and accuracy, proficiency in short game, and on course management.

Groupon | Get Into Golf
Our Grouon/Get Into Golf Clinic program will resume on May 2nd. We will be following strict social distancing guidelines and will be conducting all classes on the main end of the driving range closest to the parking lot so that you all may simply walk to the range and not have to check in at the golf shop or obtain a golf cart. Classes will be limited to 10 guests.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be the FINAL month of our Groupon/Get Into Golf Clinics as they have been conducted over the past few years. Clinics are not ending at Troon North, we are just restructuring the classes and offerings. We will no longer sell them on Groupon. Additionally on May 31 any outstanding clinics will expire. If you have not redeemed your Groupon, you may use it toward other instruction programs, but may not get the full value or the promotional value. This program is designed to add a personal touch to your golf outing. Our Professionals will video the swing of each golfer in your outing. All participants will receive an email of their swings with a professional analysis. Email can be personalized with your company logo, name, and date of your golf outing.
On-Course Instruction (8 person minimum) | $199.00 pp
This program is designed to create enjoyment among your group on the golf course. Our professional staff will join your group on the course to provide instruction, course management, and fun! Typically one professional can cover 2 to 4 groups, playing intervals of the course with each group.
One-hour Clinic (8 to 100 people)
Usually a single topic clinic covering full swing or short game.
Cost: $60.00 per person
Two-hour Clinic (8 to 100 people)
Usually a multiple topic clinic covering full swing and chipping or putting.
Cost: $120.00 per person
Three-hour Clinic (8 to 100 people)
Topics typically include, but not limited to: Full swing, chipping and putting, and pitching. Video analysis is available in 3 hour sessions.
Cost: $160.00 per person
2020 Junior Academy
Our mission at the Troon North Junior Golf Academy is to provide a high level of instruction to our young golfers, establishing an environment that refines important golf skills, and fun instructional programs, our students will learn the basics of the game and will be given a solid foundation to enjoy a lifetime of golf.
Cadet Program:
During Level 1 Cadet Program our goal is to create a fun environment where new, young golfers can learn some of tjhe basics of golf while playing enjoyable and exciting games that test their overall golf skills. Curriculum also covers traditional rules and etiquette, while utilizing our unique methods so that each young golfer will learn the game at their own pace.
- When: Every Sunday (12:00PM to 1:00PM)
- Cost: $35 Per Junior
Cadet-Master's Program:
The Cadet-Master's program is designed specifically for more experienced junior golfers who are ready to be playing on the course and possibly looking forward to competing in competive golf tournaments. Curriculum will focus on developing specific golf skills, such as distance control, power and accuracy, proficiency in short game, and on course management.
- When: Every Sunday (1:00PM to 2:30PM & 2:30PM to 4:00PM)

Groupon | Get Into Golf
Our Grouon/Get Into Golf Clinic program will resume on May 2nd. We will be following strict social distancing guidelines and will be conducting all classes on the main end of the driving range closest to the parking lot so that you all may simply walk to the range and not have to check in at the golf shop or obtain a golf cart. Classes will be limited to 10 guests.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be the FINAL month of our Groupon/Get Into Golf Clinics as they have been conducted over the past few years. Clinics are not ending at Troon North, we are just restructuring the classes and offerings. We will no longer sell them on Groupon. Additionally on May 31 any outstanding clinics will expire. If you have not redeemed your Groupon, you may use it toward other instruction programs, but may not get the full value or the promotional value. Please reach out to Director of Instruction, Doug Hammer at Dhammer@troon.com with questions on how to redeem after May 31. Ideally, try to complete as many sessions as you can in May to get the full value of your voucher.
